DUI/DWI clients who're taking part in drug and alcohol rehab centers are generally there by their own choice, but most of the time in drug and alcohol rehab as part of a mandatory court order. DUI/DWI clients, particularly initial offenders could be ordered to rehabilitation either in lieu of other consequences or as a part of a sentence. DUI/DWI clients can benefit greatly from treatment rather than being punished because of their crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been determined that those who are treated for substance abuse issues instead of other penalties being enforced upon them have much better odds of remaining out from the courts than those people who are fined, ordered to jail time, etc. In drug rehab programs DUI/DWI clients can establish why they abuse alcohol and drugs, to enable them to address these problems and find resolution to the actual situations and circumstances within their lives which trigger their drug or alcohol use. This could certainly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those that may be affected by their drug or alcohol use should they drive while drunk or high later on. This is a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
