Dual diagnosis can be a situation whereby two independent disorders exist, and most typically denotes a co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis can help someone that may not have been capable of being helped during the past, finish drug abuse because they can be correctly diagnosed and helped. Their mental health disorder may have been misdiagnosed, not diagnosed at all, or treated incorrectly which could have triggered and led to their drug or alcohol use problems. Establishing the fact someone is certainly a dual diagnosis client not merely helps establish a highly effective treatment plan for them, but could also help clients better determine what triggered their substance abuse and the way to prevent it later on. Handling dual diagnosis can be a more extensive process than a typical drug rehab program, and folks who have a dual diagnosis may need to participate in an extensive aftercare program which might include proper medical support in addition to continued rehab services. Being diagnosed with co-occurring disorders doesn't mean that the person must be medicated for the rest of their lives either, and actually lots of people who have a dual diagnosis experience far better results when treated holistically and when alternative therapy is employed.
