DUI/DWI clients that are taking part in drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers are either there on their own accord, but usually in drug and alcohol rehab due to a mandatory court order. DUI/DWI clients, specifically first-time offenders may be required to go to rehabilitation either in lieu of other penalties or as part of their sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from treatment instead of being punished for their crimes, and so can the court system. It has been established that those who are treated for drug or alcohol use issues as opposed to other penalties being enforced upon them have greater chances of staying out from the court system than those people who are fined, ordered to incarceration, etc. In drug rehab programs DUI/DWI clients can establish why they abuse alcohol and drugs, to be able to address these issues and find resolution to the actual conditions and circumstances in their lives which trigger their drug abuse. This may truly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people that may be affected by their drug abuse whenever they drive while intoxicated in the foreseeable future.
