Dual diagnosis is a circumstance whereby two independent disorders exist, and most typically describes a co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis might help a person that might not have been capable of being helped in the past, stop drug abuse because they can be properly diagnosed and helped. Their mental health disorder could have been misdiagnosed, not diagnosed at all, or mistreated which may have prompted and resulted in their drug or alcohol use problems. Establishing the fact that someone is certainly a dual diagnosis client not only helps establish an effective treatment course for them, but could also help clients better understand what triggered their drug use and the way to prevent it later on. Handling dual diagnosis is often a more extensive process compared to a typical drug rehab program, and people who have a dual diagnosis might need to take part in a substantial aftercare program that might include appropriate medical support as well as further rehabilitation services. Being identified as having co-occurring disorders doesn't mean that the person should be medicated for the rest of their lives either, and in reality lots of people with a dual diagnosis experience far better results when treated holistically and when alternative treatment solutions are employed.
