Dual diagnosis can be a circumstance whereby two independent disorders exist, and most often denotes a co-occurring drug or alcohol use and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis may help someone who may not have been capable of being helped during the past, finish drug or alcohol abuse by being correctly diagnosed and treated. Their mental health disorder might have been misdiagnosed, not diagnosed at all, or mistreated that may have triggered and led to their drug or alcohol use problems. Establishing the fact someone is certainly a dual diagnosis client not just helps establish an effective treatment plan for them, but will also help clients better determine what triggered their substance abuse and ways to prevent it in the foreseeable future. Handling dual diagnosis is often a more extensive process compared to a typical drug rehab program, and people who have a dual diagnosis might need to take part in a substantial aftercare program which might include appropriate medical support as well as continued treatment services. Being clinically determined to have co-occurring disorders doesn't mean that the person will need to be medicated through out their lives either, and in fact many people who have a dual diagnosis experience far better outcomes when treated holistically and when alternative therapy is utilized.
