DUI/DWI clients who are involved in drug and alcohol treatment programs are generally there by their own choice, but usually in drug and alcohol rehab due to a mandatory court order. DUI/DWI clients, especially first-time offenders could possibly be ordered to rehab either instead of other penalties or as a part of a sentence. DUI/DWI clients can benefit greatly from treatment rather than being punished because of their crimes, and so can the court system. It has been established that people who are treated for substance abuse issues rather than other penalties being forced upon them have much better chances of staying out from the courts than people who find themselves fined, ordered to jail time, etc. In drug treatment programs DUI/DWI clients can establish why they abuse drugs and alcohol, to enable them to address these problems and find resolution to the actual conditions and circumstances inside their lives which trigger their drug or alcohol use. This may truly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those who may be affected by their drug abuse if they drive while drunk or high in the future.
