Dual diagnosis can be a situation whereby two independent disorders exist, and most typically denotes a co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis may help someone that might not have been able to be helped during the past, stop substance abuse by being accurately diagnosed and helped. Their mental health disorder may have been misdiagnosed, not diagnosed at all, or treated incorrectly that could have triggered and led to their drug or alcohol use issues. Establishing the truth that someone is certainly a dual diagnosis client not just helps establish an effective treatment course for them, but could also help clients better know what led to their drug use and how to prevent it in the future. Addressing dual diagnosis might be a more extensive process than the usual typical drug rehab program, and folks who have a dual diagnosis might be required to take part in a substantial aftercare program which can include proper medical support along with continued treatment services. Being clinically determined to have co-occurring disorders doesn't mean that the individual must be medicated through out their lives either, and in reality many people with a dual diagnosis experience much better outcomes when treated holistically and when alternative treatment solutions are employed.
