DUI/DWI clients that are involved in drug rehab programs are either there by their own choice, but more often than not in drug and alcohol treatment due to a mandatory court order. DUI/DWI clients, especially first-time offenders may be ordered to treatment either in place of other consequences or as a part of a sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from rehabilitation as an alternative to being punished because of their crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been verified that individuals who are treated for drug abuse issues instead of other penalties being forced upon them have greater odds of staying out from the court system than those who are fined, ordered to prison time, etc. In alcohol and drug rehab centers DUI/DWI clients can ascertain why they abuse drugs and alcohol, in order to address these problems and find resolution to the actual situations and circumstances in their lives which prompt their drug or alcohol use. This can certainly save lives, not only the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people who may be affected by their substance abuse if they drive while intoxicated later on. This is a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
