Dual diagnosis can be a situation whereby two independent disorders exist, and most typically describes a co-occurring drug or alcohol use and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis can help a person that might not have been capable of being helped in the past, stop drug or alcohol abuse by being properly diagnosed and treated. Their mental health disorder may have been misdiagnosed, undiagnosed, or mistreated that could have triggered and led to their drug or alcohol use issues. Establishing the fact someone is in fact a dual diagnosis client not simply helps establish an effective treatment course for them, but will also help clients better understand what triggered their drug abuse and how to prevent it in the foreseeable future. Addressing dual diagnosis may be a more extensive process compared to a typical drug rehab program, and folks with a dual diagnosis may need to take part in a substantial aftercare program which may include proper medical support along with further rehab services. Being clinically determined to have co-occurring disorders doesn't imply that the person should be medicated through out their lives either, and actually a lot of people with a dual diagnosis experience far better results when treated holistically and when alternative treatment methods are utilized.
