DUI/DWI clients who are taking part in alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers are generally there by their own choice, but generally in drug and alcohol treatment due to a mandated court order. DUI/DWI clients, especially first-time offenders may be ordered to rehabilitation either in lieu of other consequences or as a part of a sentence. DUI/DWI clients will benefit greatly from treatment as opposed to being punished for their crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been proven that individuals who are treated for drug or alcohol use issues as opposed to other penalties being forced upon them have much better chances of remaining out from the court system than those who find themselves fined, ordered to time in jail, etc. In drug and alcohol rehab facilities DUI/DWI clients can determine why they abuse drugs and alcohol, so that they can address these issues and find resolution to the actual conditions and circumstances in their lives which set off their drug or alcohol use. This can certainly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but those that may be impacted by their drug or alcohol use should they drive while intoxicated in the future. It is a real second chance for DUI/DWI clients.
