Outpatient treatment gives treatment clients the opportunity to maintain certain responsibilities and aspects of their lifestyle while taking part in alcohol and drug rehabilitation services. Outpatient treatment is a moderate amount of rehabilitation, and should not be mistaken for the level of treatment provided within an inpatient or residential rehab program which is much more extensive. Outpatient treatment may be well suited for anyone who has a brief history of drug abuse for example, but will almost certainly not be adequate for someone whose rehab needs exceed that which outpatient treatment is prepared to provide. Individuals dealing with drug abuse often need a considerable change of environment, because many of the things that trigger their substance abuse are purely environmental. For instance, when someone has been physically or emotionally mistreated and this is prompting their drug or alcohol use, there is no way for any treatment efforts to achieve success should they return to such conditions on a regular basis. In outpatient treatment, individuals can engage in group and individual counseling, as well as family counseling services. In outpatient treatment, most centers will provide services six or seven days a week on either a part time or full-time schedule for 30 days or longer in some cases.
