DUI/DWI clients who are involved in alcohol and drug rehabilitation facilities are generally there on their own accord, but usually in drug treatment due to a mandated court ruling. DUI/DWI clients, specifically initial offenders could be ordered to treatment either in lieu of other penalties or as a part of a sentence. DUI/DWI clients may benefit greatly from rehabilitation rather than being punished for his or her crimes, and so can the judicial system. It has been determined that those who are treated for substance abuse issues as opposed to other penalties being enforced upon them have greater chances of remaining out of the courts than those who are fined, ordered to jail time, etc. In alcohol and drug treatment facilities DUI/DWI clients can ascertain why they abuse drugs and alcohol, so that they can address these issues in order to find resolution to the actual conditions and circumstances inside their lives which trigger their drug abuse. This can certainly save lives, not just the lives of the DUI/DWI clients, but people that may be affected by their drug abuse should they drive while under the influence later on. This is a real second opportunity for DUI/DWI clients.
