Dual diagnosis can be a situation whereby two independent disorders are present, and most typically denotes a co-occurring drug or alcohol use and mental health disorder. A dual diagnosis can help someone who might not have been capable of being helped in the past, stop substance abuse because they can be correctly diagnosed and treated. Their mental health disorder could have been misdiagnosed, not diagnosed at all, or treated incorrectly which could have triggered and led to their drug or alcohol use problems. Establishing the fact that someone is actually a dual diagnosis client not merely helps establish a highly effective course of treatment for them, but may also help clients better determine what triggered their substance abuse and ways to prevent it in the foreseeable future. Handling dual diagnosis may be a more extensive process than a typical drug rehab program, and folks with a dual diagnosis may need to take part in a substantial aftercare program that might include appropriate medical support and also continued treatment services. Being identified as having co-occurring disorders doesn't signify the individual must be medicated for the remainder of their lives either, and in reality lots of people with a dual diagnosis experience more effective outcomes when treated holistically and when alternative therapy is utilized.
